Writing a Newspaper Article
Different style of writing The reporter's opinions should not appear in the article - only the facts Use clear and simple language (short and to the point) Use active verbs (for example: Man bites dog) and not passive verbs (for example: Dog bitten by man).
2
Each newspaper article has a title (called the headline) that is set in large font
The writer of a newspaper article is often not credited; if the author is mentioned, this credit is called the author's byline The beginning of each newspaper article is called the lead (one or two sentences long)
3
the lead should summarize the main facts of the article, telling the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, and why) and how The lead should also contain a hook, something that grabs the reader's attention and makes the reader want to read the rest of the article The body gives the reader more detail about the event in question
4
The body is where you add quotes from witnesses
In the ending, you want to add a “kicker” which is a catchy quote or phrase Group task: Analyse various newspaper articles and look for the elements mentioned in this discussion

Mysterious Woman Escapes Jail
THE TREEGAP GAZETTE THE VILLAGE’S ONLY NEWSPAPER August 5th, 1880 Mysterious Woman Escapes Jail By Amy Nippard The infamous Foster family, owners of the “touch-me-not” cottage and “the wood” that surrounds Treegap, have found themselves smack-dab in the middle of a jaw-dropping scandal. Last night, shortly after midnight, a peculiar woman named Mae Tuck escaped from the local jailhouse. She has been brought up on murder charges and is facing a deadly hanging from the gallows. “She is deranged and may be mentally unstable”, states the Treegap constable. “I am still in disbelief that a heinous crime such as this has taken place in our sleepy little village. In all my years as constable, I have never experienced such brazen criminals like this Tuck family”, the constable continues. Winnie Foster, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Foster, has been named as an accomplice in this case. If you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of Mae Tuck, you are urged to contact the hard-working constables of Treegap immediately.
