4 Tenths… Like the Fraction!
.4 “point four” place value: “four tenths” which is the same as the fraction 4 10 So… = .4

5 0.9 Another example: “zero point 9” place value: “nine tenths”
which is the same as the fraction 9 10 So… = .9

6 place value: “three and six tenths”
One more: 3.6 “three point six” place value: “three and six tenths” which is the same as the mixed fraction 10 So… = 3.6 3

7 Hundredths… Like the Fraction!
.07 “point zero seven” place value: “seven hundredths” which is the same as the fraction 7 100 So… = .07

8 Hundredths… Like the Fraction!
.48 “point forty-eight” place value: “forty-eight hundredths” which is the same as the fraction 48 100 So… = .48

9 Equivalent Decimals the decimal .1 is the same as .10
.1 is one-tenth, and .10 is ten-hundredths they are equivalent fractions (remember?) =

10 Let’s talk about “moolah”
.1 and .10 represent the same fractional amount of a whole number… think of .10 as the money value of $0.10 or ten cents what fraction of a whole dollar is that? = = = = $0.10 = 1 10

11 Now let’s try it with the decimal .03
 what fraction of a whole dollar is .03 ? .03 and .30 are NOT the same fractional value .03  $0.03 or 3¢ or 3 pennies = .03 = 3 100

12 Mixed Numbers include a whole number value and a part of a whole 3.8 is a mixed number it represents three wholes and eight tenths of a whole = 3.8 if it were a money value, $3.80, it would represent three dollars and eight dimes = 3.8 = 10
