2 Hunger 1.  When you're hungry, how does it make you feel? emotionally? How does it make you act? 2. What barriers might limit a person’s access to nutritious food? 3.  What do you think food security is?

3 What is food security? Exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.

4 Four components of food security
If any of the below components are missing, a situations of food insecurity results. Accessibility – all people should have physical and economic access to food. Availability – all people should be able to get food consistently Adequacy – all people should be able to get nutritious food that has been grown and prepared safely Acceptability – all people should be able to et food that meets their cultural preferences, religious requirements, and/or dietary needs.

6 Activity – Yay! On chart paper I will give you and your partner a topic. For each topic there are 4 questions to answer. Please leave space under each question for another group to add answers to. Each rotation you will answer (or add to) TWO questions.

7 Enhancing Food Security Locally
In Canada Farmers markets, urban gardens, Northern greenhouses, community food centres, protecting farmland

8 Enhancing Food Security Globally
Increased Productivity and Land Base –using more land for agriculture, improving efficiency of distribution systems, support systems for farmers, improving and expanding irrigation structure. Fair Prices and Competition – protecting small family farms and domestic producers from the mega cash crop farms. Food Crops versus Biofuel – stopping using food for fuel. Only make biofuel with waste materials and non-food products Empowering women – allowing women to borrow money to start their own businesses and make money. Rural Revitalization – government policies encouraging people to remain in rural communities and become self sufficient. YOUR TURN: International Food Aid: There are many initiatives that are trying to improve food security in impoverished countries. In partners, find one initiative and explain it to the class. (Who runs it? What does it do? Who are the stakeholders?)
