As we begin to read… Remember…THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Takes place in Twain WROTE it after the failure of Reconstruction in the 1880s. Twain uses SATIRE in this piece of writing The “n-word” I will read it out loud, but we’ll refer to it as “the n- word” when it’s not directly in the text Remember…although it was “acceptable” to use back then, it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t derogatory. Play close attention to how it is used throughout the book.

Question for the first 10 chapters…
After reading the first 10 chapters, what are your impressions of Huck? What kind of person is he? What are his physical and emotional characteristics? What kind of relationships does he have? Is he a likeable character? Relatable? Why or why not?

We’re reading for theme…
While reading, you must connect each chapter to at least 2 themes. You are responsible for keeping a running list. I will periodically check to make sure that you are doing this. Themes (write them down now): Family Superstition/supernatural Morality (“right” vs. “wrong”) Home (civilization/society vs. being alone/uncivilized)

Notes, chapter 1 Family Home Superstition Morality
Doesn’t really know much about what family is like; Huck doesn’t really talk about family very much. He lives with W. Douglas, Miss Watson…is that his family? It might be the closest thing he has. What about his biological family? Huck considers Tom to be family…he would rather be with Tom in hell than with Ms. Watson in heaven. Home Seems to be wherever Huck is. He doesn’t seem to like being with Widow Douglas. He doesn’t like rules/orders. He ran away from home and only came back because he wanted to be with Tom. Superstition Huck is very superstitious about killing a spider. Why? Why does Huck spend so much time talking about this superstition? Perhaps it is because he has grown up around African American culture. Morality Widow Douglas is hypocritical. Huck can recognize this. He doesn’t care about morality, or at least what society thinks is moral.
