2 Thompsons Experimental Design

3 Thompsons Experimental Design Cont.
Cathode ray - glowing beam produced when electricity is passed through a gas at a low pressure “Using improved equipment, Thompson accomplished the deflection of cathode rays by an electrical field, which was so strong evidence that rays did consist of particles” He developed an experiment where cathode rays were deflected by magnetic and electrical fields. Thompson then discovered the ratio of the electrical charge to the mass for particles making up rays. Value of e/m (mass) = same for any gas experiment

4 Evidence Thomson resolved the question were the nature of cathode rays streams of changed particles as the Crooked believed or were they of the luminiferous as the German physics believed as he accomplished the deflection of cathode rays by an electrical field. Which was strong evidence that the rays did consist of particles.

5 How did Thomson change the atomic model?
J.J Thomson’s work change the atomic model by creating relevance to electrons, which before no one knew about. Before scientists thought of the atom as some unbreakable particle of mass. But Thomson’s work showed in fact that it must contain at least two parts, one was the newly discovered electron. Thomson later created a new model of the atom adding this part with a positive charge which were discreetly embedded electrons. This model is referred to as the “Plum Pudding Model”.
