4. Time Period
Puritanism began in the latter part of the sixteenth century in England.
Puritanism came to North America with the Puritans and Pilgrims.
This remained in New England through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

5. Why “Puritan”?
These people are called Puritans because they wanted to purify the Church of England.
They wanted a simpler form of worship.
No crucifixes, status, or stained-glass windows that were popular in the Catholic Church.

6. Puritans’ Religion Religion was a personal, inner experience.
They believed that they didn’t need a “middle man” to commune with God.
The Puritans were persecuted for their beliefs in England, so they came to “The New World.”

7. Puritans’ Religion, continued
The Puritans believed every human was a sinner because of “the fall.”
They also believed in predestination.
Predestination: Whether you go to Heaven or hell has been planned by God before you existed.
Elect: Those chosen few who would go to Heaven. Only a small few would be elect.
There was no way to tell whether or not you were elect.

8. Puritans’ Religion, continued
Puritans wanted to appear that they were elect. Therefore, they would act like the elect:
Behaving in a saintly way.
Hard work and good deeds.
However, doing these things would not make a Puritan elect. The elect would behave like this.
Turning the community against someone else.
