Activated fibroblasts, or myofibroblasts (center), can originate from proliferation of resident fibroblasts, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), and pericyte shedding, as well as from the bone marrow (BM).
