5. The Stone Age is divided into two periods:
1) Old Stone Age (Paleolithic Age)
2) New Stone Age (Neolithic Age)
Neo = New
Lithic = Stone

6. Group Activity Draw a line down the middle of your poster board
On one side write:
Old Stone Age
On the other side write:
New Stone Age

7. It should look like this:

8. Read the selection given to your group
Decide what information falls under the Old Stone Age and what information falls under the New Stone Age
What makes each Age different and what makes each Age the same?
Compare and Contrast the Old Stone Age from the New Stone Age

9. Your group should have 6 or more facts written for each side
When your group is done, get tape from Mrs. Cotten and hang it on the wall
Make sure the names of each group member are written on the back

10. OLD STONE AGE No farming Hunted animals
Gathered roots, seeds, berries, leaves
Used stone hunting weapons and tools to cut meat, scrape animal hides, cut skins to make clothing, etc.
Used bone and animal horns and tusks
Almost all human prehistory takes place during this age
Discovered fire
Fire allows people to move to areas with cold climates
People were nomadic
Being nomadic led to migration

11. Nomads
The word nomad comes from a Greek word that means “one who wanders for pasture.”
Nomads exist today.
For example, in the deserts of Southwest Asia, Bedouins move their camels, goats, and sheep from place to place to ensure that the herds have suitable pastures for grazing.

12. NEW STONE AGE Begins with invention of farming
Called New Stone Age because people could grow their own food
No longer nomadic
Settlements made
Still used stone tools
In some areas, Old Stone Age lasted until 1900s
Learned to domesticate animals
