EOC Review Systems: Direct systems & direct word problems
2
Direct Problems Sometimes systems problems are given to us without a word problems! 3 Ways to solve: Elimination Substitution Graphing
3
EXAMPLE: S#1.1 HOW DO WE KNOW THIS IS A SYSTEM?
WHAT METHOD WOULD YOU USE HERE? WHAT IS THE QUESTION ASKING FOR? A system of equations is shown below. x + 6 = 4y x − 5y = -5 What is the x-value in the solution to the system?
4
Sometimes the system is hidden in a word problem.
LOOK FOR: Two unknown items Two ways that those items are combined (often in two sentences)
5
Check it: S#1.2 – PART ONE WHAT ARE THE TWO UNKNOWNS?
WHAT ARE THE TWO WAYS THEY CAN BE COMBINED? WHAT WOULD THE EQUATIONS BE? A school store sells pens & pencils. Pens cost $0.50 Pencils cost $0.20 The store sold a total of 30 items and made $9.60 from the sale. How many pencils did the store sell?

Check it: S#1.2 – PART TWO HOW DO WE KNOW THIS IS A SYSTEM?

7
Now You Try Some! Look for the unknown items and their combinations.
Also - Use the skills of key terms and reading the question.
8
Check it: S#1.3 A system of equations is shown below. 3x + 5y = 11
What is the y-value of the solution to the system?
9
Check it: S#1.4 A system of equations is shown below. 2x + y = -7
y = x + 8 What is the solution to the system?
10
Check it: S#1.5 The sum of two numbers is 42. The difference between the two numbers is 16. Which is the smaller of the two numbers?
11
Check it: S#1.6 Jojo bought 4 cookies and 1 brownie at the bake sale for $3.00. Niko bought 12 cookies and 5 brownies for $ What is the cost of 1 cookie?
