1 Properties of waves Write on the RIGHT side

2 Parts of a wave Crests: Points where the wave is highest Troughs: Points where the wave is lowest

3 How we can describe a wave?
By its Amplitude: how far particles in the medium move away from their normal rest position By its Wavelength: the distance over which the wave’s shape repeats.

4 How we can describe a wave?
By its Frequency: tells you how many cycles occur in an amount of time. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) Frequency= Number of cycles time By its Wave Period: the time required for one cycle Frequency is the inverse of wave period: Frequency= ____ Period

5 Amp, Amp, Amp it up For mechanical waves, amplitude is related to the amount of energy the wave carries Ex: In a sound wave, the more amplitude it has, the more energy is being transferred. More energy = louder sound.

6 Frequency & amplitude of Sound Waves
nzvnd1k What happened to the sound as the frequency and amplitude of the wave increase?

7 Energy loss due to spreading
Wavefront: As the wave moves away from the point of origin, in the shape of a circle or a sphere, the wave loses energy

8 Reflection: Draw the wave below and label the vocab word that corresponds with each letter:
(distance) (time) C 1 4 2 3 D
