5 Properties Properties are characteristics that can be used to describe a substance. All matter has two types of properties: Physical Chemical

6 Physical Properties Definition: A physical property describes the physical appearance and composition of a substance. Examples Colour Luster: ability to reflect light Malleability: ability of substance to be molded into another shape Density: amount per unit size Hardness: resistance to indentation Solubility: how much of a given substance will dissolve in a liquid Conductivity: ability to conduct electrical current Melting/freezing/boiling point: temp. at which something changes state to a solid, liquid, or gas.

8 Physical Change Definition: a physical change is a change in the appearance or state of a substance that does not change the composition. Examples: Cutting a piece of paper with scissors Boiling water Mixing paint Breaking glass

9 Chemical Properties Definition: chemical property describes how a substance interacts with other substances (such as acids). Chemical properties are only observed when a chemical change occurs. Examples: Reactions with acids/heat Ability to burn/break down Reaction to water Behavior with air

10 Chemical Change Definition: chemical change is a change that results when two or more substances react to create a different substance or substances. The new substance (s) have completely different properties from the original ones. There is a PERMANENT color/odor change, energy released/absorbed, production of a gas & is not easily reversed. Examples: Burning a piece of paper Apple rotting Mixing baking soda and vinegar Digestion of food Metal rusting

11 Pure Substance or Mixture?
Pure substance is made of only one kind of matter and has a unique set of properties that sets it apart from any other kind of matter. A pure substance may be either an element or a compound. Element – cannot be broken down any further. (oxygen) Compound – two or more elements. (water)

12 A mixture is a combination of pure substances. Four types of mixtures
Mechanical mixture: differences are visible Solution: different substances are not visible Suspension: a cloudy mixture with tiny particles are held within another, particles can be separated. Colloid: cloudy mix, but the particles of the suspended mix are so small they cannot easily be separated out.
