November 9, Math 201 Objective: Students will use fractions to name amounts greater than 1 Aim: What are improper fractions and mixed numbers? NYS Mathematics Standards: Number Sense and Operations Prior Knowledge: 2/3 + ¾ =

2 Mini-lesson: Fraction strip activity
Mini-lesson: Fraction strip activity Find how many halves are the same as two wholes and one half. Use two blue strips and one yellow strip to show 2 wholes and one half. How many ½ strips are needed to match 2 wholes and 1 half? What fraction names the same amount as 2 wholes and 1 half? 2 wholes and 1 half =

November 10 Math 201 Lesson Extension Objective: Students will use fractions to name amounts greater than 1 Aim: What are improper fractions and mixed numbers? Do Now: How can you tell 8/4 is another name for 2?

7 Means I have 10 amounts, each amount equals 1/3

8 One whole One Whole One Third 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/3

9 “Ten thirds” is just multiplying 10 x 1
