7 Cows come in different colours and sizes

8 Pigs and sheep might also end up in the Pound

9 Farmers and farm- workers like Harry Skevington often could not read or write. But they could use a simple tally

10 A Tally stick was usually a Hazel stick
with a notch for each animal and then cut down the middle

11 The person who found the animals kept one half
and the poundkeeper the second When the owner of the cattle paid the finder, he was given his half of the stick which he took to the poundkeeper

12 The Poundkeeper or Tallyman looked after the animals in the pound until he was paid and was given the other half of the tally stick.

13 People used tallies all over the world
For instance on banana plantations In the West Indies

14

15 The Tallyman counted up the number of
bananas each man picked so he could be paid In Harry Belafonte’s Banana Boat song he sings: Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana Daylight come and me wan' go home

16 That’s 5 cars ! People still use tallies for counting.
Try counting cars going past For each car make a line on your paper That’s 5 cars !

17 This is called a five-bar gate
This time when you count the fifth car make the line go across the others like this. Then carry on with 4 upright and one across This is called a five-bar gate This makes adding up your tally much easier! It helps if you know your Five Times Table

18 HOW MANY BARS?
