2 Motivations for Outdoor Experiences
Motivation is the driving force or reasoning behind a person’s desire to do something It can also be described as the explanation a person may give for wanting to achieve a particular feat, complete a task or realise a dream

3 Examples of Motivation
May Include: A desire for an adrenalin rush To be the first person to accomplish something A desire to experience a feeling of achievement To set a record To seek a feeling of independence To escape from the reality of everyday life To share the wonders of the natural world with others through writing, photography, artwork etc... A desire to prove something

5 Feelings of Accomplishment
Improves self esteem Allows for people to believe in themselves Gives people a sense of achievement Proves to some people that they can achieve anything

For study and research For conservation and preservation The love of the outdoors

8 An Example: Brigitte Muir was the first Australian woman to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Initially she set out to be the first, but then it became important for her just to prove to herself that she could do it

9 Opinions Tim Waston Munro, a forensic psychologist believes that many people who participate in dangerous activities are trying to escape from the ascribed roles and demands of everyday life Mountaineer Tim McCartney-Snape believes that the urge to seek adventure and explore the physical world is a fundamental part of human nature

Write a brief outline of a personal outdoor experience in your journal Describe the experience to the class, including what your motivations were for undertaking the experience Learning Activity 1.12 Class survey of Achievements. What reasons do they give for wanting to do these things? What are the main influences on the activities they participate in?
