2.1 Nature of Matter
2
Matter the “stuff” which the universe is composed of. 2 Characteristics: Mass Space Eg’s? gasoline, air, chair – composed of matter Atoms - tiny particles matter is composed of. Can see using a powerful Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). Eg. Looking at sand close and far away.
3
Using a STM…What are these?
4
Atoms Is copper made of the same kind of atoms as gold?
This is like the alphabet – different combinations of letters make up different words.
5
Compounds Compounds: Substances made from bonding atoms together. Contain 2 or more different types of atoms Specific compounds consist of the same particles throughout. Egs: Molecule: made up of atoms that are stuck together What’s the difference between a compound and a molcule? A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically. A compound is a molecule that contains at least two different elements. All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds. What are Molecular hydrogen (H2), molecular oxygen (O2) and molecular nitrogen (N2)?
6
Elements Eg. Pure gold – only contains gold atoms
7
What are the top ten elements in the universe? Write them down
8
Which of the top ten elements are found in the top 5 in air?
What is the top element found in the human body?
9
Read pg.28: Carbon an element of many forms
What are the 3 different forms of carbon? How can there be 3 different forms of carbon? What are the 3 different arrangements of carbon?
10
With a partner discuss: what are the 3 different states of matter and what are their properties? Give examples
11
do section 2.1 review questions. And q’s 1-7 pg.45
If you finish this, start reading section 2.2
