Theme: A central message or insight into life revealed through a literary work. The theme may be stated directly or implied. When the theme of a work is implied, readers think about what the work suggest about people or life.

3 Common Themes Perseverance leads to growth. True love is difficult to vanquish. Letting go of bitterness and learning to forgive is freeing. Truthfulness leads to hope and life. Humility is the handmaiden of honor.

4 Irony

5 Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something the characters do not.

6 Situational Irony Irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected.

7 Verbal Irony Irony in which a person says or writes one thing and means another, or uses words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of the literal meaning. 

8 Theme and Irony R.A.C.E: How does irony contribute to the theme?

9 R.A.: Situational irony contributes to the theme of never judge a situation without knowing all the facts . C: For example, “When the girls crawl from underneath the bed and one states that the other girl needs to be more careful when choosing a house to rob”, the viewer is shocked. E: This shows that the viewer expected that they were hiding from someone who had broken into their house, however, in reality, the girls were the thieves hiding from the home owner.

12 Create an Irony Storyboard
Create a Storyboard which gives examples of the three types of irony. The type of irony being described must be located at the top of the frame and defined: 25 points The visual must also contain dialogue which details the irony: 25 points Under the visual the student must explain the why the visual and dialogue is ironic: 25 points Overall Presentation: Grammar, Mechanics, Correctness, and Appeal: There are no errors and the work is commendable: 25 points
