How do we empathize with people in the Great Depression?
Two options: You will create a story based on a photograph First person perspective – it can be from anyone in the photograph What would the Depression look like through a child’s eyes? Be creative! It can be a diary entry, a memoir, a grandmother telling the story of what life was like in the Depression to her grandson, etc… Use everything we’ve learned about OR You will create an image based on a story Two diary entries today, plus the Grapes of Wrath excerpts from yesterday You may have artistic freedom – you can draw a realistic image, or an abstract image!

Photo//journalism time
Choose your own adventure: Based on a photograph, create a background story for the family/individual. Consider: Whose perspective do you want to represent, if there is more than one person in the photograph? Who are the people? Come up with a background. What are their names? How are they related, if they are? What did they do before the Depression hit? What are they doing now? Where are they going? Why? What forced them to make that decision? Why are they in their current situation? Be specific, and use evidence from what we’ve learned in class. Based on a personal recount of the Depression, draw a detailed picture that embodies the feeling and tone of the memoir. It must be detailed. From the image, I should be able to get a clear snapshot into what his or her life was like during the Depression. And, most importantly – how will you survive? What do you want to happen in order to fix the problems caused by the Depression? How can it all be made better?

FAQs: Am I doing both of these? When’s this due?
No, choose one. When’s this due? Monday. What does that mean? Do I need to color the picture? No. Why? Can I draw stick people? No. Work smarter, not harder (trace!) Can I type the story? Sure. Can the story/image include other things we talked about in class? Yes! Combine it all! How long does the story have to be? Long enough to answer all of the questions I’ve asked you
