2 Vocabulary adversary: an opponent; an enemy
boisterous: noisy, energetic, and cheerful; rowdy nuptial: of or relating to marriage or the wedding ceremony

3 Terms aside: A remark by a character in a play intended to be heard by the audience but not by the other characters. blank verse: verse without rhyme, often in iambic pentameter characterization: details and description an author uses to develop and build a character conflict: problem or struggle Types: Man vs. Man, man vs. nature, man vs. society, man vs. self

4 Terms Couplet: two lines of verse (poetry) rhyming and having the same meter Epithet: Adjective expressing a characteristic quality or attribute; sometimes used in place of a name Example: star-crossed lovers = Romeo & Juliet Figurative language: words or expressions used to create a special effect or feeling Foreshadowing: the author uses clues or hints at what may happen later in the story

5 Terms Iambic meter: A metrical foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable or a short syllable followed by a long syllable, as in delay. Iambic pentameter: lines of poetry that can be divided into 5 metric feet with alternately unstressed and stressed syllables. Example: My name/ is John/ I love/to go/ to school

6 Terms Metaphor: comparison of two unlike things
Simile: comparison of two unlike things using ‘like’ or ‘as’ Pun: A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings. Example: Kings worry about a receding heir line.

7 Terms Prose: the ordinary language people use in speaking or writing
Spoken by the servants and other common people Poetry: Rhythmic, compressed language that uses figures of speech and imagery to appeal to the reader’s emotions and imagination Spoken by higher social class
