DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY II
2
Distributive Property
a (b + c) = ab + ac Or a (b - c) = ab - ac
3
Combining Like Terms - Vocabulary
Term – number, variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables Examples: 3 y 4xyz
4
Vocabulary Term – number, variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables
5
Vocabulary Term – number, variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables Constant – no variables (doesn’t change)
6
Vocabulary Term – number, variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables Constant – no variables (doesn’t change) Coefficient – number portion of a term with variables
7
Like Terms ***Exactly the same variable portion Examples 2x 5x -3x
8
Like Terms Like terms can be combined using the distributive property
For example, suppose you had 2x + 5x This could be rewritten as (2 + 5)(x) or 7x
9
IMPORTANT Only the coefficient (number in front of the terms) are combined. The variable portion stays EXACTLY the same
10
Combine like terms 6x + 5x (6 + 5)(x) 11x
11
Combine like terms 8y - 7y (8 – 7)(y) 1y or just y
12
Combine like terms More than one variable
4x – 7y + 2x 4x + 2x – 7y 6x – 7y
13
Combine like terms More than one variable
7y + 5x – 5y + 2x 7y – 5y + 5x + 2x 2y + 7x

Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, & Order of Operations
15
Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, & Order of Operations
Order of operations says that we must multiply before we add. 3 is being added to 2
16
Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, & Order of Operations
Order of operations says that we must multiply before we add. 3 is being added to 2 2 is to be distributed (multiplied)
17
Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, & Order of Operations
Order of operations says that we must multiply before we add. 3 is being added to 2 2 is to be distributed (multiplied) We need to distribute before adding

Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, & Order of Operations
Now we can change the order of the terms to get the “like terms” next to each other.

Distributive Property, Combining Like Terms, & Order of Operations
Now we need to combine the like terms
