1
Kinds of Matter All matter is made up of either pure substances or mixtures of pure substances
2
All Matter Pure Substances Mixtures Compounds Elements
3
Elements Simplest form of matter (nothing simpler)
Building blocks that make up every different variety of matter in the universe
4
My Periodic Table Yes I still have it, and you will get one too!
5
All Matter Pure Substances Mixtures Compounds Elements
6
Compounds A pure substance made up of elements that are chemically combined in a specific ratio Perfectly homogenous (same throughout) Has a definite composition regardless of its origin, location, size, or shape Can be decomposed to the elements that make it up only through a chemical change
7
NaCl H2O Compounds Much more abundant than elements alone
Ex: Water, sugar, salt, hydrogen peroxide NaCl H2O
8
Compounds When elements combine to form a compound, the elements lose all of their properties, and a new set of properties unique to the compound is created NaCl
9
All Matter Pure Substances Mixtures Compounds Elements
10
Mixtures When 2 or more substances combine yet retain their individual properties Held together by physical means Thus, separated by physical means Filtration, absorption Ex: soil, most rock, plants, animals, coal, air, rivers
11
Mixtures Can be 2 Types Homogeneous Heterogeneous
Have the same composition throughout Ex: dissolving sugar in water -called a solution Solution almost always with water because only liquid found in nature Composition is not the same, or uniform , throughout Ex: mineral -you can see the differences in composition from spot to spot within the mineral sample
12
Homogeneous Mixtures are Solutions
Solute Solvent Dissolved substance Ex: Sugar The dissolving agent Ex: Water All solutions consist of one or more solutes and a solvent
