To be able to: Compare the properties of metals and non-metals Key Words: Metal, Non-Metal, Conductor, Oxide
2
The Properties of Metals and Non-Metals
Tuesday, 21 May 2019 The Properties of Metals and Non-Metals Date and title in books. You need a pen, pencil & ruler. Starter Activity – 5 minutes Exam Question
3
Learning Outcomes State where metals are found in the periodic table
Target 9-1 State where metals are found in the periodic table (F/H) Target 4-9 Compare the physical properties of metals and non-metals. (H) Target 5-9 Compare the chemical properties of metals and non-metals Extension: Application of Knowledge Target 8/9 Explain the problems involved in classifying metalloids Learning Outcomes
4
Metals are found on the left hand side of the periodic table, most elements are metals.
5
Physical Properties Metals Non-Metals
Most have high melting and boiling point Most have low melting and boiling point Most are hard Most are soft Most are malleable Most are brittle Most are ductile Most are not ductile Most are sonorous Most are not sonorous Most are shiny Most are dull Good conductors of heat Poor conductors of heat Electrical conductors Electrical insulators
6
Chemical Properties Metals Non-Metals Most have 1 – 3 outer electrons
Easily lose electrons Easily gain electrons Form oxides that are basic Form oxides that are acidic Are good reducing agents Are good oxidizing agents React with acids to form salts Do not react with acid Many form coloured oxides Most oxides are colourless
7
Would you classify it as a metal or non-metal?
A metalloid is an element that either has a mixture of metal and non-metal properties or has properties in between them. Germanium has these properties: • grey-white shiny solid • melting point 937°C • semi-conductor • reacts with chlorine to form the chloride (GeCl4) which is a liquid molecular compound • germanium oxide reacts with acids to form a salt solution and water. It also reacts with alkalis. Would you classify it as a metal or non-metal?
