We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Congress: The Legislative Branch Establishes the Congress and its powers Main job: make laws Congress is a bicameral legislature – 2 houses – The Senate & The House of Representatives

Congressional Elections General elections are held every 2 years - on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November Congressional Terms of Office House of Representatives – 2 years Senate – 6 years

Representation House of Representatives: representation is based on the population of each state Senate: each state has the same number of Senators, 2 Key Terms (Vocab) Impeach - To accuse a public official of wrongdoing. (does not mean to kick out of office) Veto – to reject a bill or proposal

How a Bill Becomes Law Member of the House or Senate introduces a bill to a committee. The committee reviews the bill and can make changes or kill the bill. House and Senate debate the bill on the floor then vote. If both houses approve the bill with a majority vote, it goes to the President. President has 2 options: sign or veto - if he signs, bill become law - if he vetoes, bill goes back to Congress and they can override the veto with 2/3 vote in each house Video (I’m Just a Bill)

Powers Of Congress Taxation Regulate commerce among the state and with foreign nations Establish rules for naturalization (becoming a U.S. citizen) To coin money (mint/print money) Declare war Maintain and regulate the armed forces
