Warm-Up 2/28/14 Add L.O. #2 to the Unit 9 Title Page:
Describe the arrangement of atoms and relative kinetic energies of the four states of matter (plasma, gas, liquid, solid).
2
States of Matter Friday 2/28/14
3
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Different States: Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma
4
Kinetic Molecular Theory
Explains how particles in matter behave. All matter is composed of particles Particles are in constant, random motion Particles collide with each other and the walls of their container
5
Solid Characteristics: Definite shape and definite volume
Particles: closely packed, vibrating in place
6
Liquid Characteristics: indefinite shape and definite volume
Particles: still touching, slide past each other
7
Gas Characteristics: indefinite shape and indefinite volume
Particles: far apart and fast, spread evenly in container
8
Plasma Characteristics: high temperature gas
Particles: positively and negatively charged gas particles, even faster moving
11
Temperature The state of matter depends on temperature.
Temperature—related to the average kinetic energy of an object’s atoms or molecules.
13
Your Job Piece together the States of Matter Jars.
Create your own for Plasma! Inside of each Jar, describe how the particles move and list TWO examples.
