What kinds of things do you think you will be doing? What sort of things will you be thinking about? What are some terms you will need to know?

Mix and match the following sound techniques to their definitions
Alliteration The deliberate repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds in a sequence of words Sibilance Words that imitate the sounds associated with that word Assonance The repetition or duplication of sounds at regular intervals. Rhyme The repetition of consonant sounds in a sequence of words Onomatopoeia Repetition of letters sounding like a hiss e.g. “s” and some “z”

Activity: Close Reading a Poem
Read the poem “No Ordinary Sun” by Hone Tuwhare and complete the following tasks: Identify any words which you do not know. Find and record their meanings. Describe the tone of the poem. How is this tone achieved? Identify and important figurative language technique used in this poem. Explain its effect. Identify at two more language features used by Tuwhare and explain their effects. Explain what you think Tuwhare’s purpose is in this poem. What does he want us to think/understand?
