The “odds and ends” Kingdom
Protists The “odds and ends” Kingdom
2
Protists Characteristics
Unicellular One cell only Some are heterotrophs Have to go get their food Some are autotrophs Automatically make their food like a plant
3
Protists Characteristics
Many move Some form colonies of many cells Many have qualities of animals, plants or fungus
4
Algae All act like plants All are autotrophs
Diatoms shown here are the most prevalent oxygen producer on our planet.
5
Sea Weed Multicellular
6
Euglena Act like a plant Have a whip like tail called a flagellum
Reproduces asexually
7
Dinoflagellates Surrounded with plates Has two flagella
Contains toxins Responsible for “red tides”
8
Animal like Protists For example this Rotifer It is a heterotroph
Moves
9
Other animal-like Protists
Amoeba Moves with false feet called Pseudopods
10
Paramecium Moves with short fuzzy hairs called cilia.
11
Stentor
12
Vorticella
13
Fungus like Protists All members act like a fungus Multicellular
Live in damp locations Change forms during life cycle
14
Protist practice Using the prepared slides of the Protist practice focusing as many as you can in the time allowed. Focus under the low, then the medium power objective. Turn the high powered objective. Use only the fine adjustment knob to focus in. Draw each Protist under the highest magnification possible. Label each Protist and the magnification
