2. What makes a Scientific Drawing?
What were some of the differences we noticed between the “Scientific Drawings” and the non-scientific drawings?

DRAW LARGE AND IN PENCIL!!
DRAW ONLY WHAT YOU SEE (this is a scientific observation)
USE DISCTINCT, SINGLE LINES WHEN DRAWING (Do not sketch)

4. TO ILLUSTRATE DARK AREAS ON A SPECIMEN, USE DOTS (DO NOT SHADE OR CROSS HATCH)

6. All DRAWINGS MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: A TITLE – Clear and concise. Top, centre and underlined LABELS – Label all parts of specimen you know with STRAIGHT LINES listing parts on the right hand side of the page MAGNIFICATON – The magnification of your drawing compare to the actual size of the specimen

6. CALCULATING MAGNIFICATION OF DRAWING
SIZE OF DRAWING (μm) / Actual Size (μm)

7. EXAMPLE
Say I drew a 100mm (10cm) version of the previous “specimen” I observed Actual size of specimen = 500μm Magnification of Drawing = 100mm/500μm What is the problem with the above equation^

8. EXAMPLE Magnification = 100mm (1000)/ 500μm = 100 000μm / 500μm
We must convert mm to μm.
Multiply by 1000 (103 ) (Conversion of larger mm into smaller μm)
Magnification = 100mm (1000)/ 500μm = μm / 500μm
= 200x

9. BEFORE WE GO INTO DRAWING ORGANISMS
Make a scientific illustration of an object in the room
Make sure the drawing contains:
Title
Labels
Magnification
Correct formatting (pencil, large, dots, etc.)
When you have finished the drawing you may begin to look at specimens under the microscope.

10. BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER
Grab a specimen slide from the front of the room.
Locate the specimen, and make a scientific illustration on what you see.

11. SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION
DRAWING MUST INCLUDE:
Title (2 marks – One for title, one for proper formatting)
Labels (1 mark - Label the cytoplasm according to the SD rules)
Magnification (2 marks)
Correct formatting ( 1 mark – pencil, large, dots for dark regions)
