Abstract In an age influenced by fear of God, the people of Europe would do anything to appease him. This is solidified by the killing of thousands in the name of God, half a world away. The Crusades came about when Pope Urban II proclaimed that Christians must maintain control of the Holy City of Jerusalem which had fallen under Islamic rule. Specifically all those who die while fighting in this conflict shall go to heaven. This prompted thousands to take up swords in the name of the cross and force either conversion or death upon all those who oppose them.

Gold, Ivory and Salt found in north central Africa perhaps best explain the reasons why the people of Africa migrated east thus opening up new trade routes.
