1 Short Answer Responses
A T E Take notes on SAQ strategy Practice SAQ and Crossover

2 Answer A = Answer - Your answer must directly address the prompt.
Use words from the prompt to compose your answer Mention title and author of text in a single selection. This differs for crossovers.

3 ANSWER in Foursquare The Answer part of your ATE response will be brainstormed in the “I Say” box. JUST USE THE WORDS FROM THE PROMPT TO WRITE YOUR ANSWER!! Don’t try to get all fancy. We’re practicing the BASICS.

4 Text Evidence T-Text evidence must support the claim you made in your answer. You must EMBED your text evidence in your own words. Don’t just stick a quote in there with no words before it! Format your quote properly.

5 TEXT Evidence in Foursquare
Choosing good text evidence requires 3 steps Quote supports Answer CONTEXT is given so quote makes sense Quote is EMBEDDED in your own words That’s why the TEXT Evidence has 2 squares in the outline: CONTEXT- The parts of a written statement that come either before or after a specific word or passage and impacts its meaning. This info will be your interpretation of what’s going on in the text right when your quote happens and will help you embed your quote. IT SAYS- This is the actual quote taken word for word from the text

6 TEXT Evidence in Foursquare
CONTEXT- The parts of a written statement that come either before or after a specific word or passage and impacts its meaning. This info will be your interpretation of what’s going on in the text right when your quote happens and will help you embed your quote. IT SAYS- This is the actual quote taken word for word from the text. It needs to make sense with the context info that you include BEFORE you write the quote. When these two squares in foursquare are put together, it will make your complete embedded quote for your text evidence.

7 Explain So what? Explain HOW your quote supports your answer.
Why does anyone care? What can the reader learn from your answer and text evidence? How can this information apply to the human race in general? This should be a universal statement that TEACHES the reader something about your answer and text evidence.

8 EXPLAIN in Foursquare This is the “so what” box.
Sometimes it helps to start your explanation with the words “When people…”, but that doesn’t always work for the prompt. You may have to use the words “When authors…” Just make sure that you’re explaining HOW your quote proves your Answer, and what the reader can LEARN from the information in the Answer and Text Evidence sentences.

9 ATE USING FOURSQUARE “IT SAYS” -
TEXT EVIDENCE - Exact words from the text that support what you wrote in your Answer. Must be embedded in your own words. 3                         “I SAY” ANSWER – use words FROM THE PROMPT to write your Answer.   1                        “CONTEXT”     2 What is happening in the text when your quote appears? This is how you will EMBED your quote INTRODUCE TEXT EVIDENCE! 4                          ”SO WHAT” EXPLAIN how your quote and answer combined can teach the reader something. Try beginning your EXPLANATION sentence with the words “When people…” or “When society...”

10 FOURSQUARE IT SAYS =                          3                          I SAY 1                                     CONTEXT           2 4                                SO WHAT

11 Crossover The only difference is that you have to have a transition and a second quote. The key word is in the prompt when it says, “Support your answer with text from BOTH selections.
