1 Do Now Decide whether each of the items below is an element, compound or mixture. Pure Water Salt Dirt Carbon Air Oxygen Sugar Copper

2 Elements A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means.   Elements are pure and made up of only ONE type of atom. Every known element is represented on the PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

3 NOW open your boxes Each color in your box represents a different element Assign each color to an element. I’ll list a few to help you out. Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon, Chlorine, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Sodium, Fluorine, Iodine.

4 Compounds A substance of two or more different elements chemically bonded in fixed proportions. A molecule is two or more atoms chemically bonded together, which means the smallest form of a compound is one molecule of that compound. A compound cannot be broken down into its individual elements unless a chemical reaction takes place

5 Now The springs and sticks in your box represent chemical bonds.
Use the materials in your box to make three different compounds.

6 Mixtures Many different elements and/or compounds close together.
Unlike compounds, mixtures are not held together by chemical bonds. Solutions are a type of mixture we will discuss in more detail later in this unit

7 Now Using your kits, create a mixture of elements and compounds.
Draw your mixture on your lab sheet. When you are done, answer the following questions.
