Standards/Objectives
1. Read chapter 6 of 1984; theorize what Orwell is trying to reveal about the character of Winston through his use of the flashback in the chapter 2. Students will formulate a “thesis” statement for content in a chapter of 1984. Core Standards Addressed: RL : Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. RL : Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed).
3
After reading: Explain the function of the flashback, and what Orwell was trying to reveal about Winston’s character through the contrast of his “encounter” and his relationship with his estranged wife. Formulate Orwell’s “thesis” for the chapter. (What point is Orwell trying to make about sexuality in a totalitarian society? Does he accomplish his goal? Why/Why not?)

Closure Make sure you have at least three “trouble ticket” entries. Be sure to have your name written on the “ticket.” It is your “ticket” out of class!!
