The Lost Coast—Humboldt & Mendocino County, California. Some of the last undeveloped coastline in America, the Lost Coast of California represents a stretch of pure wilderness. Mountains of the King Range seamlessly fall into the great Pacific Ocean. Dozens of freshwater creeks carve canyons through the coastal mountains and empty into the roaring sea, creating a paradise for the rich diversity of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. A rough trail—a third each of shifting sand, hard sand, and rock—has significant portions pressed between cliff and waves, making it only passable at low tide. Amidst Redwood and Douglas fir forests or isolated sandy beaches, finding the perfect site to watch a spectacular California sunset and sleep under a blanket of stars is an effortless task.
