Adverb clauses of time beginning with after, before, since, and while can be changed to adverb phrases when the clause has no form of be.
Before I went to graduate school, I traveled the world.
Before going to graduate school, I traveled the world.
Since I became a teacher, I have learned so much about different cultures.
Since becoming a teacher, I have learned so much about different cultures.

The subordinate conjunction is sometimes omitted in a phrase. A phrase without a subordinating conjunction is called an adverbial phrase.
After having finished my homework, I decided to take a long walk.
Since coming to school, I have met a lot of interesting people.
Be careful! DO not omit the subordinating conjunctions in a passive construction.

7. Adverb clauses of reason and time…
These both can be changed to adverbial phrases, but just as we learned on Tuesday, it depends on the meaning and context and not all grammar rules are 100% true all the time.
Because/ Since/ As
Because/ Since/ As I failed the final exam, I will have to repeat Level 6.
Failing the final exam, I will have to repeat Level 6.
Being
Because/ Since/ As I was not ready for my date, I made my boyfriend wait for me in the kitchen.

8. Note 7
A present perfect or past perfect verb in an adverb clause can be changed to having + past participle in adverbial phrase.
Since I have gone to Italy, I have a greater appreciation of the Italian language.
Having gone to Italy, I have a greater appreciation of the Italian language.

9. Note 8
A clause containing a passive verb can be changed to an adverbial phrase with just a past participle. If the subordinating conjunction can be omitted without changing the meaning , delete the subject and any auxiliaries in the passive sentence.
Because I was excited about good news, I called my whole family to tell them the good news.
Excited about the good news, I called my whole family to tell them the good news.

10. Be careful!
If the subordinating conjunction cannot be omitted without changing the meaning, as in some clauses of time, form an adverb phrase by deleting the subject and changing the form of be to being.
After the mayor was re-elected, he started working on a public park project.
After being re-elected, the mayor started working on a public park project.

Use adverbs of time, place, reason, and conditions to describe the events of a person’s life from the following movie trailers.
Step 1: Take notes on the major things that happen in the trailers. Ex. Although Benjamin Button was born with a strange disease, he lived a very interesting life.
Step 2: Change the adverb clauses to an adverb phrases.
Ex. Having been born with a strange disease, Benjamin Button lived a very interesting life.
Tell the story of Benjamin Button’s life.
