1 For the week of September 18-21, 2012
Kindergarten Newsletter Mrs. Leland’s Class For the week of September 18-21, 2012 Language Arts Focus: Is it fall yet? This week, to help us get ready for the changing season, we learn about and do activities related to apples. We will spend the next few weeks learning about apples to help prepare us for making applesauce. Yum! Your child will bring home the book Toy Store this week. This book is a great review of all the “popcorn words” that have been introduced so far. We will continue to practice reading and writing the popcorn words. We will also continue to work on beginning and ending sounds in words. Please continue to use the practice sheet that was sent home on the back of the newsletter last week. It is a very important skill for your child. During stations the children will also practice counting the number of syllables or “beats” in a word. We describe syllables as the number of beats in a word. (most of the time it is the same as the number of vowels if you are unsure). They will also play a rhyming game. Remember, words rhyme if they have the same middle and ending sounds (cat and bat). These are two skills that will be assessed on the first report card. New “Popcorn Words” a, to, it This week we will continue working on the numbers The children will need to identify the numbers quickly and write them correctly. I have been amazed at how well they are doing with the 5 frames we introduced last week. We will also continue to discuss the concepts of more, fewer, and the same when comparing objects and numbers. Last week we compared the letters in our names to each other and to Chrysanthemum’s name. Make sure to use those words at home to make sure they understand. We continue to work on counting daily. Try this at home, you count two numbers and your child supplies the next two numbers in the sequence. Continue to at least 20 and go farther if you can. Math Focus: Notes from Mrs. Leland: Calendar Notes: This year is just flying by! I can’t believe we are already halfway through September! On Thursday of this week, we will be collecting all of our Scholastic Book Orders. If you would like to purchase any books please return your order form in your child’s Important blue folder, or place an order online using our class code to receive a $5.00 off coupon for your next purchase! What a deal! Friday we will be meeting with our book buddies, again!
