Warm-Up 9/23/13 Classify the steps of the recipe in your folder as physical or chemical Each person writes the answers on their lined sheet of paper
2
Physical and Chemical Changes
Monday 9/23/13
3
Overview Matter is composed of particles called atoms
Elements are different types of atoms, which can chemically combine to form compounds Combinations of these elements and/or compounds lead to mixtures!
4
Properties of Matter Different elements, compounds, and mixtures have different properties These properties can be classified as physical or chemical
5
Two Categories of Properties
Physical Chemical Inherent to substance Examples: color, smell, freezing/boiling point, density, magnetism, hardness, malleability (can be flattened) Potential to undergo a type of change Examples: reactivity with other chemicals, flammability, rusting activity
6
Altering Matter When a form of matter is subjected to new situations, it may change These types of changes are characterized as physical or chemical
7
Physical Changes Do not produce a new substance (element or compound)
Examples: crushing, bending, melting, freezing, breaking, dissolving (salt in water)
8
Chemical Changes Result in the formation of a new substance, take place at the molecular level Examples: combustion (burning), some cooking, rusting (reaction w/oxygen), mixing with acid/base
9
Your Job Complete the Chemical and Physical Change WS (two sided with review) QUIZ tomorrow (elements, compounds, mixtures)
