1 Properties of Water

2

3 Is H2O Mixture Compound Molecule All of the above

4 H2O A chemical compound that is a molecule, so the bond is _______.
That means the bond is ________.

5 some basic science Mixture – a material composed of 2 or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined. Salt and pepper Cinnamon and sugar

6 Two Types of Mixtures Suspension Solution
All the components of a solution are evenly distributed throughout the solution. Saltwater is a solution: Salt is the SOLUTE that is dissolved in the SOLVENT (water). Suspension A mixture of water and a non-dissolved material. Material in your blood, such as cells and undissolved compounds, are an example of suspension.

7 Water Makes up ~70%+ of Earth’s surface ~60 - 70% of your mass
Exists on surface of Earth in all 3 physical states Solid form less dense than liquid form The properties of water make it a unique and very important compound for life to exist on our planet

9 The Water Molecule Water is POLAR
Polar – There is a negative “pole” and a positive “pole”. This makes water “stick” to itself. Creates 2 types of attractions: Cohesion Adhesion

10 Water is Polar Water is POLAR because there an uneven distribution of electrons between the 2 hydrogen and the oxygen.

11 Hydrogen Bonds Forces of attraction (not chemical bonds)
involving hydrogen Occurs between molecules or within a molecule

12 Cohesion/Adhesion Cohesion – an attraction between molecules of the same substance. Adhesion – an attraction between molecules of different substances.

13 Acids, Bases and pH

14 Acids and Bases Acid solutions contain higher concentrations of H+ ions than pure water and have pH values below 7. Bases, or alkaline, solutions contain higher concentrations of OH- ions then pure water and have pH levels above 7.

15 pH Scale Ranges from 0 – 14 At pH 7 : the concentrations of H+ ions is equal to OH- ions. Water has a pH of 7. The lower the number the more acidic the solution. The higher the number the more basic the solution.

16 Never underestimate the power of WATER!!
