2 Main challenges Lack of a preparedness step by step plan Lack of coordination Lack of trained staff Lack of integration of IYCF into relief Lack of awareness in the community at large Lack of strong leader or a focal person Trained staff leaves during an emergency

3 Main Challenges IYCF is not considered a priority Lack of roster or database of trained staff We think of training the professionals but overlook the governement and other actors that stay in the country during an emergency Capacity people of non health people who are putting together the food boxes and other decision makers Lack of policy and national guidelines Lack of monitoring and evaluation

4 Strategic directions Development, approval and (implementation) of government policies on IYCF in general and specifically in emergencies Incorporation or/and Development of general guidelines for emergencies including nutrition and IYCF Identification of focal persons (national, state level and district level) in different departments

5 Strategic Directions Global guidelines on dos and dons on what to include in a food box to be sent out in an emergency Formation of a national/state/district disaster management core groups operating in advocacy in non emergencies and in emergencies into which IYCF is integrated Advocacy and key messages on IYCF to decision makers Conducting training workshop for health and non health personnel, follow up training, and supportive supervision

6 Strategic Directions Translating and using module 1 for orientation and advocacy to non health workers and module 2 for health workers (ENN module) Prepare a large database of trained staff ready to be deployed that is regularly updated for back up in the event staff leaves Creating national level trainers focusing on IYCF Awareness to the media and awareness through the media (TV, radio, newspaper, etc) to the public

7 Strategic directions Simplified and adapted of ready pamphlets only for emergencies on IYCF for all Need for a focal person surrounded by a focal group that operates during and out of emergencies on advocacy and training as well as get the funding Roster of community trained people always present in emergencies

8 Strategic Directions Monitoring and evaluation of training activities by district/state/national/ core group members During an emergency, mobilise the rapid response team and reinforce /reorient them on IYCF practices and requirements Documentation,reporting, sharing information and lessons learned post emergency
