2. Ploughman 80% of the population worked in the fields ploughing used
for drainage, to control weeds, used to fertilize land
lands were rotated every few years
a fallow year: every few years a field was given a rest
ploughing was a year round job
September- breaking up stubble on nearly harvest fields
November- prepared fallow fields for wheat and rye crops
January- worked on new fallow fields
Marsh- peas and beans planted
ridged land was laid flat
April- sowing barley
May- dunging the land
June- deep plowing and ridging

3. The Plow
with a hand plow a man could complete a trench around 30 yards long in a day
with a horse or ox the same 30 yard trench could be created in fifteen minutes
the plow
coulter- like a large knife that cut a lit in the earth
ploughshare- a curved blade that cut under a section of soil and forced it up and out
mould board- a wooden board on top of the share that forced the disrupted earth to one side, making it fall over

4. Painters
many tradesmen and craftsmen worked land in addition to their trade or craft
painters
had to create their own paint
art styles
despite the strong renaissance styles on the continent British painters favored styles with patterns and meanings
very symbolic
painting was most commonly done on cloths that were hung in homes

5. Beer Brewers
Ale was the most common drink but beer was becoming more common
Ale was usually brewed at home by women
Beer was often brewed commercially
beer is ale that is flavored with hops
hops has a preservative effect so beer had a much longer shelf life
commercial
often made in bigger vessels and made in bigger batches

6. Alehouses and Taverns
In 1577, there were 24,000 premises that sold alcohol
alehouses were more common in towns
usually only sold drink
taverns were more likely in an urban setting with middle class customers
ordinary was a smaller establishment with food and drink
often in these establishments you had to bring your own cup
However, tipping, or getting drunk was not socially acceptable
it was an evil decried at all levels of society
often there was dancing in the afternoon and singing and music in the evening
