Warm Up, August 29th, 2013 What unit measures Mass? Volume? Distance?
What might density measure? Explain the difference between mass and weight. What tool do we use to measure (short) distances?
2
Basic Measurement Prefixes*
Kilo = Deci = 1/10th or 0.1 Centi = 1/100th or Milli = 1/1000th or
3
Basic Measurement Equations*
Area (A) = Length x Width Volume (V) = L x W x Height Density (p) = Mass/Volume
4
Basic Measurement Examples
A computer is 3 dm by 5 dm. What is its area? That same computer is also 2 dm tall. What is its volume? A mouse has a mass of 35g and a volume of 7cm3. What is its density?

BrainPop: Measuring Matter
6
Classwork Review Area = Length x Width 103 cm x 44 cm = 4532 cm 5 m x 2.5 m = 12.5 m
7
Volume = Length x Width x Height (Depth)
Classwork Review Volume = Length x Width x Height (Depth) 4532 cm x 3 cm = 13596 cm 12.5 m x 1.2 m = 15 m
8
Classwork Review Density = Mass / Volume 2000 g / 4000 cm3 = ½ or 0.5 g/cm3 100 g / 125 mL = 0.8 g/mL 400 g / 625 mL = 0.64 g/mL

Area/Volume Class Measuring
Objectives: - Measure your desk’s area and volume (as though it were one solid object). - Measure the area and volume of this room (as accurately as possible). - When measuring the room, did you take into account the two pillars or the hallway?
