Zaroff says: “Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if need, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong” (70).
What does he mean/believe?
Why does it matter that people in this world think this way?

2. Analyze your quote by:
considering what the quote reveals about the character and the author’s message, and how it connects back to the essential question?
breaking down the language to look for imagery, diction, figurative language (metaphors, similes, hyperbole etc.) identifying a deeper meaning and significance.
considering why the character says/does what he/she does?
considering how the quote demonstrates his/her attitude toward other characters, motifs etc.
considering what struggles are revealed in the quote
considering what motivates the character

As you read pgs , find a quote that addresses ONE of the essential questions:
1. What does it mean to be human?
How might people lose their humanity?
How/why do some mange to maintain their humanity when faced with #2?

Share your quotes from the first part of the story. Choose ONE from your group and go through the say-mean-matter process again and discuss how your group might improve or add to the analysis.
Do your best to consider some of the topics we discussed in reading about Walter Palmer and the Cossack revival in Russia.
