Pre-Calculus 1.2 Kinds of Functions
Objective: The student will be able to make connections among the algebraic equation for a function, its name, and its graph.
2
Terminologies: Relation – any set of ordered pairs
Function – set of ordered pairs in which every x has only one y Y-intercept – where a graph crosses the y-axis (value of x = 0) X-intercept – where a graph crosses the x-intercept (value of y = 0) F(x) – Euler’s notation. another way to represent y
3
Terminologies: Independent vs. Dependent Variables
Domain – set of values of the independent variable “x” Range – Set of values of the dependent variable “y” Asymptote – vertical or horizontal “imaginary” line that the function approaches but never actually meets
4
Terminologies (con’t)
Extrapolation – extending a graph beyond all given data. Interpolation – estimating a value within the given data
5
