Forces in Equilibrium – Free Body Diagrams
Draw all the forces acting on the following objects. Indicate the type of force: Gravity Normal Force Friction Force Tension FN Ff FT Fg Fg is force due to gravity (weight). Gravity pulls the box down. It points straight down, not at an angle. FN is normal force. Normal Force of the table holds the box up. Normal means “perpendicular,” so FN is perpendicular to the surface of the table. Ff is friction. Friction resists the direction of motion, and goes in the opposite direction of motion. FT is tension. Tension in the string holds the box up. M N Box on table. Box hanging from a string. Draw the two forces in this diagram. Draw the two forces in this diagram. P O Motionless box on ramp (box is not moving) Box hanging from two strings. Draw the three forces in this diagram. There are three forces in this diagram.
