6
Chop off the ons Parl finiss Tord
7
Endings Ais Ait ions iez aient
8
How do you use it? ( this is new)
The imperfect and the passe compose mean basically the same thing.
9
The passe compose J’ai regardé/ je suis descendu (e)
This is used for one time actions in the past.
10
The imperfect This is used for : Progressive actions
emotion/ background
11
What’s a progressive action?
I was reading when Marc came down the stairs. First of all, the word « quand » means when. The first verb (before the quand/ when) was happening. This is imperfect. The second verb interrupted the action. This is passé composé. Je lisais quand Marc est descendu.
12
Examples: J’étudiais quand Marc a frappé la porte.
(was going on) (he hit it once) Je mangeais quand Justin a parlé (was going on) (he spoke once)
13
The second usage: These are the verbs that are emotion/ background. THESE WILL ALWAYS BE IMPERFECT être porter aimer
14
If you see something like:
Il fait beau/ il fait mauvais That’s referring to weather and will always be imperfect as well.
15
Mult choice Decide whether past or imperfect fits in the blank
16
Essay On a lined sheet of paper, Write an essay of 5 sentences describing a trip you have taken. All of the verbs should be either in the past or imperfect tense. You decide (this is why we are doing this).
