Presentation on theme: "ADVERBS What is an adverb?"— Presentation transcript:

1 ADVERBS What is an adverb?
An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. An adverb tells where, when, how, or to what extent (how long or how much). 1. The books arrived yesterday. 2. She is extremely beautiful. 3. He opened the package very carefully. Just as an adjective makes the meaning of a noun or a pronoun more definite, an adverb makes the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb more definite.

2 Adverbs Modifying Verbs
Where? We lived there. Put that down. When? Water the plant weekly. Timothy arrived early. How? The rain fell softly. Adele sang beautifully. To what extent? The turtle hardly moved. Suzy partly completed the form.

3 Adverbs Modifying Adjectives
They did an exceptionally fine job on the project. (the adverb exceptionally modifies the adjective fine, telling to what extent) Mr. Moore’s last grammar quiz was rather easy. (the adverb rather modifies the adjective easy, telling to what extent)

4 Adverbs Modifying Other Adverbs
He almost never eats his entire dinner. (the adverb almost modifies the adverb never, telling to what extent) Move very quickly or else you will be eaten by that tiger. (the adverb very modifies the adverb quickly, telling to what extent)
