Objectives Identify and understand an author’s perspective in a nonfiction work. Identify PAPNDOIO in a sentences. Homework: Close rEading Due Thursday (You must bring your answer sheets with rationales)

Warm Up Get your close reading packets. Write two example sentences that have DO and PN. Write 1-2 sentences explaining how you know.

Group Practice – Close Reading Week 4
Get into groups of 4. Assign one member of the group to get your reading packets from me. Use your answer sheets to discuss the answers. ->Use your rationale in your discussions. You must have one written. When you establish a group answer, write it in the group answer portion of the answer sheet. You have 15 min. to complete.

Close Reading Objectives: Week Five
Beyond standard annotation requirements, please complete the following: "Editor" pp Highlight the sentence that most contributes to the central idea. Highlight the thesis statement. Re-state the thesis in the margin. Highlight the author's use of appeal. Identify the type of appeal in the margins. Highlight diction used specifically to appeal to the reader's emotion. Summarize the likely effects of this diction in the margins. Is this thesis statement re-stated in the conclusion? If so, highlight it and draw a line connecting it to the thesis statement Compose a statement evaluating this letter's effectiveness. Cite textual evidence to support your critique.

Disney Article – Download one and get into your pairs
Annotate for: Highlight main idea Meaning of title Relevance of pictures to text Add a sentence to the bottom explaining if a graph would have been helpful. Given the diction used, what position does the author take on the vaccination debate? What is the tone towards vaccinations? When finished, compare your annotations. Give your partner two annotations to add to their reading.

Questions from the reading
On your own, answer the questions from the reading on a new google doc. You will need to write 2-3 sentences explaining how you came to that conclusion. When finished, turn it in. You cannot work with a partner.
