1 Ions Lab 24 October 2013

2 Safety and responsibility
Protection (hair, shoes, goggles, gloves etc) behavior handling chemicals (smelling, touching, disposing, accidental spills) clean up (wiping, cleaning, putting away)

3 Background information
Ionic compounds can conduct an electric current when melted or dissolved in water. This is due to the fact that the bonds break down in water allowing the ions to move freely in the water. Ion movement allows electricity to flow. Positive ions will move toward a negative charge and negative ions will move toward a positive charge flowing through the liquid (Be sure to write this down)

4 Purpose of the lab Several different compounds will be tested to see if they conduct an electrical current and if so, how much of a current do they generate?

5 Hypothesis Always written in If...Then… format.
Let me get you started... If electrical current is applied to a solution containing an ionic compound mixed with deionized water then….

6 The expirament Follow directions on lab sheet.
Make sure to fill in chart and answer questions. Use your results to create a lab write up. You are working with a partner, but each of you is responsible for creating a lab write up.
