1 Chapter 3, Lesson 1 By Mr. Schonberg

2 Essential Question: What is matter made of? Hypothesis:

3 Vocabulary Atom: Smallest ____ of an ______
Molecule: A group of two or more _____ that are joined ________ Element: A ______ made of only one kind of ______ Matter: Anything that has _____ and takes up ________

4 Solvent, solute, and solution
SOLVENT-the substance that the solute dissolves in SOLUTE-dissolves in the solvent SOLUTION-an even mixing of particles combining the solvent and solute

5 An example of solvent, solute and solution….
IS THE KOOL AID TWISTS PACKET A SOLVENT, SOLUTE OR SOLUTION?? IS THE WATER A SOLVENT, SOLUTE OR SOLUTION??? IS THE FINAL PRODUCT OF KOOL AID A SOLVENT, SOLUTE OR SOLUTION??

6 BASIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER
WHAT IS MATTER? MATTER is anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE IS YOUR PENCIL MATTER? IS AIR MATTER? ARE CELLS MATTER? IS SUNLIGHT MATTER? (Here is a hint…ONE of the answers is NO. Which question is it?)

7 SUNLIGHT DOES NOT (HAVE) MATTER!
WHY??? Well, the sunlight that comes into a room, makes that room have light. Does a room with that sunlight have more mass than a dark room? No. BUT… If you put air in a football…does air have matter? Does it make the deflated football have more mass?

8 BASIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER
Matter is made up of PARTICLES… or microscopic elements The top spoon is metal, the bottom spoon is plastic… The particles that make up both spoons are different. The particles that make up the plastic spoon are lighter and not as packed in together like the particles that make up the heavier, metal spoon.

9 Particles of Matter What is an Atom? What is a Molecule?
An ATOM is the smallest possible particle of a substance. Matter can be broken down and divided smaller and smaller until you reach one ATOM. HOWEVER, an ATOM IS made up of smaller parts like protons, neutrons and electrons. A MOLECULE is made up of two or more ATOMS joined together MOLECULES cannot be seen by regular microscopes

10 Elements An element is a substance made up of one atom
If you take oxygen, break it down as much as you possibly can…you will get one atom. Can you do that with water? How about salt?

11 Let’s play…Element or not?

12 What were the answers to the game???
If you see a BLACK frame around the picture, it IS an element If you see a WHITE frame around the picture, it is NOT an element How many did you get right?

13 Some Groups of Elements
Scientists group elements to make it easier to classify. About 75% of the elements are METAL NOT ALL METALS ARE ELEMENTS!!!! (Poor little steel ) One way metals are classified is by its appearance If a metal is MALLEABLE, then it can be easy to shape or form If a metal is DUCTILE, then it can be made into thin wires without breaking…great for electricity to go through!

14 METAL VS. NONMETAL METAL Shiny Malleable Ductile 75% of all elements
NONMETALS Dull looking Can’t be pounded Brittle Do NOT conduct electricity very well

15 But what about the NOBLE GASES?
Neon is an element, but it is NOT a metal or a nonmetal. It doesn’t have color or odor…so you can’t smell it or see it. Therefore, neon is called a NOBLE GAS. But you add some electricity to it and…(you can see it under the car)

16 Essential Question: What is matter made of? Hypothesis: Answer:
