Each state has own laws for selecting candidates for office Generally one of four methods: Caucuses Party leaders choose Criticized as undemocratic Nominating Conventions Public meeting to choose candidates Local parties send reps – often corrupt

3. Primary Elections Most common Election where party members compete for nomination Open or Closed 4. Petitions - Person can announce candidacy and file petitions with enough voter signatures to be put on ballot

Every four years Each party gathers to choose ticket (Pres/ V.P.) Historically, members of congress from each party chose candidates

Criticized b/c Congress didn’t speak for entire nation, so began primary elections in each state to choose candidate Each state then sends representatives to a National Convention to vote for representative Party’s candidate is announced at the convention
