Thunder and lightning as three witches enter
They make plans to meet Macbeth
Fair is foul, and foul is fair / Hover through the filthy air

3. Act 1, Scene 2: Summary
A captain tells King Duncan of Scotland about Macbeth’s bravery in battle
Macbeth has killed rebel leader Macdonwald
Banquo also fought bravely
In another uprising, the thane of Cawdor has betrayed King Duncan
King Duncan vows to execute the traitor
Bestows title of thane of Cawdor on Macbeth

4. Act 1, Scene 3: Summary The three witches appear to Macbeth and Banquo
Macbeth will be king
Banquo’s sons will be kings
Macbeth becomes fixated on prophecy
Wonders if he will have to perform dark deed to become king

5. Act 1, Scene 4: Summary
King Duncan thanks Macbeth and Banquo for their actions
Duncan says he will appoint his son, Malcolm, heir to the throne
Malcolm now stands between Macbeth and throne
Duncan will dine at Macbeth’s castle later that evening
