“As I watched, the sun broke weakly through, brightened the rich red of the fawns, and kindled their white spots.” E.B. White, “Twins” Poems and Sketches Analysis: What kind of flames does kindled imply? How does this verb suit the purpose of the sentence? Would the sentence be strengthened or weakened by changing the sun broke weakly through to the sun burst through? Explain the effect this change would have on the use of the verb kindled. Apply: Brainstorm a list of action verbs that demonstrate the effects of sunlight.

4 Diction-2 Analysis: What kind of flames does kindled imply? How does this verb suit the purpose of the sentence? Kindled implies the beginning of a fire, a glowing of easily ignited material used to start a fire. The purpose of the sentence is to capture a moment, a scene of fawns and early morning. The word kindled suits the purposes of the sentence because it aptly expresses the glow of the fawns’ white patches and, as with fire, the newness of the fawns. Would the sentence be strengthened or weakened by changing the sun broke weakly through to the sun burst through? Explain the effect this change would have on the use of the verb kindled. Strengthens= verb burst connotes the excitement and violent action of a new beginning. Weakness= the newness of fawns corresponds to the sun’s actions: kindling. Either way, the verb kindled would no longer suit the purpose of the sentence. A sun that burst through the clouds does not kindle. Burst suggests a strong, decisive action not the gentle action of kindling . The word chosen must always suit the purpose.

5 End of Act II – 2 responses
On an index card: Choose and state the most important moment in Act II. Identify the line or lines that accompany that moment. Why is it the most important? What does it reveal about a character/the emerging themes in the play? On the other sticky note: (new charts for Act II) Choose either Othello, Iago, or Desdemona. On a sticky note, write a comment, question, or line that expresses your thoughts on the character you chose. Place the sticky note on the appropriate chart.

Group 2 – Review ALL the post it notes on the Desdemona (and other characters) charts. Synthesize and write 2-3 statements summarizing what is represented on the chart. Also, identify 1-2 questions to share with the class. Group 3 – Review ALL the post it notes on the Iago charts. Synthesize and write 2-3 statements summarizing what is represented on the chart. Also, identify 1-2 questions to share with the class. Group 4 – Review Iago’s speeches in Act I. What seems to be his attitude to human relationships? How would you sum up his philosophy on life? Group 5 – Review Iago’s speeches in Act II. What seems to be his attitude to human relationships? How would you sum up his philosophy on life? Group 6 Sort index cards from Most Meaningful Moment in Act II. Present what similarities/differences are in the responses; then present what your group believes is the most important moment and why. Group 7 – Using symbols and pictures, create a visual representation of what has happened thus far in the play. Leave room for additions. Group 8 – Identify key phrases/words that each of the following characters use and explain why these phrases and words are important. (i.e. what do they reveal about the character, etc.) Iago, Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, Roderigo
