1 Relativization

2 Relativization The process of forming a relative clause.
A relative clause is a clause narrowing the potential reference of a referring expression by restricting the reference to those referents of which a particular proposition is true. I teach the girl… (main clause) I teach the girl who just greeted us (relative clause) The relative clause and its head noun form the relative construction.

3 Bound relative clause:
Bound relative clause: Qualifies an explicit element appearing in the main clause and refers back o that element by means of some device within the clause The man whom I saw yesterday went home The shared argument is referred to by the subject of the matrix clause, but the direct object of the relative clause. Free relative clause: Does not have an explicit antecedent external to itself. I like what I see The relative clause itself serves the object.

4 Restrictive relative clause:. Modifies the meaning of its headword
Restrictive relative clause: Modifies the meaning of its headword. The man who lives in this house has not been seen for days. The relative clause modifies the noun. Non-restrictive relative clause: Merely provides supplementary information. The mayor, who lives in this house, has not been seen for days. The relative clause provides only supplementary information which does not modify the subject in significant ways.

5 Finite relative clause:
Finite relative clause: As the name goes it shows an event finite with respect to time. I like what I see. Non-finite relative clause: It shows a non-finite temporal sequence. He is the person on whom to rely.
